Course Summary

Health Information Management, Semester A is the first part of a two-semester course that is an introductory course in health information management. This course introduces you to the US healthcare system and the basic concepts related to health information management. First, you will learn about the US healthcare delivery system, including the types of healthcare settings, regulatory agencies, health insurance programs, and insurance claims. Then, you will be introduced to healthcare data, its components, its management, and the relevance of databases and database management systems to HIM. You will also learn about what electronic health records are and how they have grown in relevance in the US healthcare landscape. Finally, you will gain an understanding of the different information systems that HIM professionals use as part of their jobs: electronic health record (EHR) systems, clinical decision support systems, administrative systems, financial systems, and research and ancillary systems.
