Course Summary
Medical Coding and Billing, Semester A is the first part of a two-semester course that prepares high school students for a career as a medical coding and billing specialist. The topics covered in this course provide a strong foundation for students planning to take a certification exam, such as the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam or the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam. Unit 1 presents an overview of the US healthcare delivery system and explains what medical coders and billers do to keep this system operating efficiently. You will be introduced to these coding systems used for medical billing: ICD-10-CM, CPT®, HCPCS Level II, and ICD-10-PCS. Unit 2 provides a review of medical terminology. You will gain proficiency in the use of medical terms, abbreviations, and acronyms related to body systems, diseases and disorders, pharmacology, medical procedures, diagnostic tests, medical documentation, and healthcare regulations. Unit 3 provides a review of human anatomy and physiology and the different body systems. Finally, in Unit 4 you will explore careers and certification programs in medical coding and billing.
